Automated Boxing Scoring System

The Automated Boxing Scoring System (ABSS) is a research and development project being conducted in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Sports Science / Sports Medicine (SSSM) section. The system uses wireless communication, micro sensors, smart integration, and computer scoring to encourage accuracy and safety.
The 'boxing suit' provides a powerful training aid for amateur boxing. A long-term aim of the project is to increase the safety of amateur boxing by placing greater emphasis on scoring points rather than injuring an opponent.
The system allows monitoring of performance in real-time via the ABSS real-time viewer that indicates the location of hits, basic statistics on hit locations, and the current score of each boxer. The advanced software package allows further analysis and playback of recorded bouts. This can allow the boxing coach and sports scientists to analyse and compare bouts blow-by-blow.
The system comprises two suits, each of which includes a pair of gloves, head gear, and a vest. Each item has been instrumented to allow detection of impacts.
A recent collaboration agreement between AIS and CSIRO has opened up a path for further development of the system utilising textile and fibre technology.
The boxing technology is now being used in the new sport of Box'Tag, you can find out more information on the sport and see the system in action at Strongarm Boxing
